Gracing our collection cover is New River Gorge, West Virginia — one of America’s newest and most dramatic national parks. Carved over 65 million years, the gorge is a whitewater mecca and a crown jewel of the Appalachians. If you’re planning a visit, here’s what to know:

• Spring (April – May): High water from rain and snowmelt creates massive Class III–IV+ waves — prime season for thrill-seekers.
• Summer (June – August): Warm weather and stable, lower flows make it perfect for families and first-time rafters.
• Fall (September – October): Stunning foliage, great base flows on the New River, and the legendary dam-released Gauley Season on the nearby Gauley River — a bucket-list run for serious paddlers.
